Day 10
In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (Or a few!) Tell us what makes it work for you, and why it appeals to you so much. Talk about what you like to see in fanworks featuring that theme most. Feel free to include recs and examples!
My favorite tropes/kinks/motifs are:
- May-December Relationships (This is why I like Twelve/Clara [Doctor Who], Sessmom/Inuyasha [Inuyasha], Mrs. Higurashi/Houjo [Inuyasha], Colonel Brandon/Marrianne [Sense and Sensibility], Mr. Knightly/Emma [Emma]
- 'Cest Ships - incest, soulcest, preferably angsty and full of taboo feels: Peter/Claire [Heroes], Quicksilver/Scarlet Witch [Marvel], Inutaisho/Sesshoumaru [Inuyasha], Azula/Zuko [Avatar], and pseudo-incest too, like step-siblings Thor/Loki [Marvel], and even weirder, Soulcest, [Kikyou/Kagome] where two incarnations of the same soul are intimate. Some incest ships I'm Meh about though so depends on the situation.
- Body Switching - Freaky Friday, Big, Trading Places, The Gang Goes Black [It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia]. I love it. I think it's hilarious and it amuses me. It was the inspiration for my fic "The Flip Side" where Loki and Darcy switched bodies.
- Wild West/Pirates in Space - Think Firefly, Star Wars, Captain Harlock, Space Battleship Yamato, Cowboy Bebop. I like the idea of retro things or spaghetti westerns taking place in space. I don't even really like westerns that much. I just like the idea of Space being more of a wild frontier rather than controlled by alliances.
- Nice Guys winning - I like this in romances. Mostly because I get bored with dominant alpha males that have mental problems. Yawn. I have seen a lot of anime's like this and it has pleased me. Golden Time, Tenchi, etc.
- Regency/Jane Austen type AUs - Take my favorite fandom characters, modern or futuristic, and drop them into Jane Austen's time. Boom. I'm happy.
- Dark Comedy - I love things that are dark, gory, full of horror and murder but has a sense of humor to it or make light of things. Monty Python or Kurt Vonnegut. Bring that stuff into fandom and wreck it.
- Villains as Main Characters/Villain point of views with NO redemption and winning - I like that, but I don't see it often. Or when good characters go dark. I'm getting into a lot of Dark!Rey for the Star Wars fandom lately, which is like that. I love Regina from Once Upon a Time. Azula from Avatar. Loki from Marvel. Kylo Ren from Star Wars. Magneto from Marvel. I like to cheer for villains. After all, they don't think they're villains, not really.
- Silver Screen/Hollywood AUs or Film Noir/30s and 40s crime - LA Confidential, James Cagney movies, This Gun for Hire, The Thin Man. I love that stuff. I wrote and published my first novel with a film noir/crime motif. I almost wrote an Oliver/Felicity [Arrow] fic where Felicity was a safe-cracker from the 30s and she was trying to steal a diamond "heart" that belonged to Oliver Queen. If someone writes something original or fandom based on that I'm there!
